With a scheduled release date of September 27, 2011 for a debut album, many are wondering if J. Cole will be what his fans expect him to be. When it was said that J. Cole signed with Roc Nation, many people, especially fans of this talented rapper, were elated. Roc Nation is owned by arguably one of the best, if not the best, rappers, Jay- Z. With his help, J. Cole's future would be bright... except it appears that there is not much "help" coming from Jay- Z.
Why is J. Cole is continuously releasing mixtapes while his peers are making solid albums. Also, exactly what is going on in the offices of Roc Nation that they aren't focusing on crafting a solid album? Many jokes are being told that J. Cole's debut album might never get released, citing that Ace Hood is on his 3rd release, while he's still pedaling mixtapes. But that is the sad truth.
Ironically on the night of his label head's release of his highly anticipated collaboration album with Kanye West "Watch The Throne", J. Cole released his latest EP. "Any given Sunday" is a 5 track layover until his debut album comes out. Not surprinsingly, this ep is just another showcase of his lyrical and storytelling ability. Mixed with released and unreleased tracks, there is a showcase of the potential greatness that his listeners know is there. The melodic sample driven "pity" is a good example of his poetic writing flair and ability to articulate his perceptions of life.
Although only 5 tracks, it is not disappointing... the only true disappointment is the feeling that J. Cole's star might burn out before the shine really occurs. Listeners are accustomed to "mixtape J. Cole", but as most music heads know mixtapes don't translate to albums. If J. Cole can grasp the concept of making a single as opposed to just a song filled with "verbal braggadocio", then he can be the success we are all anticipating.
