In the words of talent: LAZERlibby of Lazerbitch interview

With the recent releases of music that incorporates different genres, it’s safe to say that music of today is an expression of how far we have come as a culture. Electro- pop beats are becoming more frequent in “r&b" music today (ie. Kelly Rowland’s “when love takes over, Chris Brown’s “beautiful people", Rihanna’s “only girl in the world").

I came across a track called “venir" from a group called Lazerbitch. Automatically, I was intrigued with the viral beats and hooks, combined with strong vocal melodies. It was reminiscent of the iconic sounds of the 80's or even the early works of Robyn. Formed from two members, Mad Max (Max Houston) and Libby Picken, Lazerbitch has begun making waves and winning over audiences. Their strong and growing catalogue has generated an expanding international fan base. Lazerbitch is poised to sweep the world with their unique sound.

Mad Max, the founder, is responsible for the group’s sound and material (he contributes as a co- writer). But the other enthralling aspect of the group comes from that of the vocalist, Libby (who also contributes as a writer).

I got a chance to talk to Libby and explore her musical genius and what she feels she brings to the group that sets them apart from the music of today. It was a refreshing conversation.

yhgmblog: So, understand that I’m not really an interviewer, more so a reviewer so to speak
Libby: girl, that’s fine
yhgmblog: so tell me about yourself...
Libby: well I’m 1/2 of the group Lazerbitch and I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember
yhgmblog: how would you categorize Lazerbitch’s sound? Is it different from your own personal sound?
Libby: the group’s sound is electro based. My personal sound is more pop.
yhgmblog: So the group isn’t a far stretch from the music you made prior to joining?
Libby: Not really. When I officially joined the group in 2007, I was making similar tunes, while still exploring other genres of dance music. Max and I have been collaborating since 2000.
yhgmblog: Wow! 2000?
Libby: yea. seems like forever. I think I just gave away my age.
yhgmblog: you have very strong, distinctive vocals. What kind of music inspired you to decide to make singing a career?
Libby: I'm classically trained in opera. I also love show tunes and musicals. What you might find as a surprise, is that one of my real loves is punk rock. Max's too. We were both listening to punk way before we got into dance music.
yhgmblog: Funny you should say musicals because I did notice a dramatic flare in some of your notes.
Libby: yea... I’ve always loved musicals. I used to trick my friend’s younger siblings into believing that I was the singing voice of Ariel from "The Little Mermaid".
yhgmblog: that’s hysterical. Let’s talk about your work history. Have you done any work outside of the electro/ dance/ pop genre?
Libby: yes. I have written and sung hooks for other artists.
yhgmblog: hip hop?
Libby: Yup. Unfortunately, most of my hip hop contributions thus far never really amounted to anything but cool tunes (nothing officially released). Hopefully one day that will change! I am really proud of some of my hip-hop hooks.
yhgmblog: sounds cool. do you feel that you have yet to receive any substantial recognition musically?
Libby: I wouldn’t exactly say that I haven’t. The trance remix of "Electrofreek" on Paul Oakenfold's "Great Wall" CD put my name right next to Madonna's on the tracklisting.
yhgmblog: That's a dope accomplishment for your career thus far.
Libby: I agree.
yhgmblog: so what’s next for Lazerbitch?
Libby: We're working on our first EP to be released before the end of 2011. I'm really excited about it. We’re going to be doing a few covers of our fave punk rock songs. It should be dope. LAZERleak!
